A fresh and vibrant basil tomato sauce perfect for pasta, pizza, or as a dipping sauce.
Ingredients

- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the crushed tomatoes and sugar to the saucepan. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in the fresh basil and dried oregano if using. Cook for another 2 minutes.
- Remove from heat and serve over your favorite pasta, pizza, or as a dipping sauce.
Notes
- For a smoother sauce, blend it with an immersion blender after cooking.
- This sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
