Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the crushed tomatoes and sugar to the saucepan. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Stir in the fresh basil and dried oregano if using. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat and serve over your favorite pasta, pizza, or as a dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, blend it with an immersion blender after cooking.
