Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs of pork shoulder, trimmed
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Buns for serving
  • Coleslaw for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill or smoker to 225°F (107°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix together the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  3. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it’s well coated.
  4. Place the pork shoulder on the grill or in the smoker, and cook for 4-6 hours, or until the meat is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  5. During the last hour of cooking, brush the BBQ sauce over the pork shoulder.
  6. Once cooked, remove the pork shoulder from the grill and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  7. Shred the pork using two forks, mixing in any remaining BBQ sauce.
  8. Serve the pulled pork on buns, topped with coleslaw if desired.

Notes

  • For a deeper flavor, marinate the pork shoulder overnight with the spice rub.
  • Feel free to customize the BBQ sauce to your taste; add honey for sweetness or vinegar for tang.
  • This recipe can also be made in a slow cooker. Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.
