Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 to 4 tablespoons ice water
- 3 medium apples
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 egg
- for sprinkling coarse sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat, stirring constantly until it turns golden brown and has a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Pour in the browned butter and mix until crumbly.
- Add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough holds together. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- In another bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Arrange the apple mixture in the center of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border. Fold the edges over the apples, pleating as you go.
- Brush the dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the apples are tender.
- Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use a mix of sweet and tart apples.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra treat.
