This crispy orange chicken recipe is a homemade version that’s better than takeout! Crispy, juicy chicken coated in a tangy orange sauce with just the right amount of sweetness.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 teaspoons grated orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger
  • Green onions, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix together flour, salt, and pepper. Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour mixture, shaking off the excess.
  2. Dip the floured chicken into the beaten eggs, then coat with panko breadcrumbs.
  3. In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken pieces in batches until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. In a separate saucepan, combine orange juice, sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, and ginger. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  5. Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes. Stir in orange zest.
  6. Toss the crispy chicken in the orange sauce until well coated.
  7. Serve garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

  • For extra crispy chicken, double fry the chicken pieces.
  • Feel free to adjust the sweetness of the orange sauce by adding more or less sugar.
  • Serve with steamed rice or fried rice for a complete meal.
