- 4 salted herring fillets
- 1 large apple, peeled and diced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh dill for garnish
Instructions
- Soak the salted herring fillets in cold water for about 2 hours, changing the water halfway through to remove excess salt.
- Once soaked, drain the herring and pat dry with paper towels. Cut the fillets into bite-sized pieces.
- In a bowl, combine the diced apple and chopped onion.
- In another bowl, mix the sour cream, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Add the herring pieces to the apple and onion mixture, then pour the sour cream dressing over the top. Gently toss to combine.
- Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld.
- Before serving, garnish with fresh dill and serve chilled.
Notes
- You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less sugar to the dressing.
- Serve with rye bread for a traditional touch.
