Description

A traditional Kashubian dish that combines the savory flavor of herring with the sweetness of apples, creating a delightful balance.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 salted herring fillets
  • 1 large apple, peeled and diced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh dill for garnish

Instructions

  1. Soak the salted herring fillets in cold water for about 2 hours, changing the water halfway through to remove excess salt.
  2. Once soaked, drain the herring and pat dry with paper towels. Cut the fillets into bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a bowl, combine the diced apple and chopped onion.
  4. In another bowl, mix the sour cream, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  5. Add the herring pieces to the apple and onion mixture, then pour the sour cream dressing over the top. Gently toss to combine.
  6. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld.
  7. Before serving, garnish with fresh dill and serve chilled.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less sugar to the dressing.
