Description

These classic homemade candy apples are a perfect treat for Memorial Day gatherings. With just a few simple ingredients and a foolproof technique, you’ll have delightful candy apples ready in no time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium firm apples (Granny Smith or Fuji recommended)
  • 2 cups granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon red gel food coloring (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon extract (optional)
  • 6 wooden candy apple sticks
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace: line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly coat with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Remove wax from apples by dipping in boiling water for 5 seconds and scrubbing with a towel. Insert sticks into the stem end of each apple.
  3. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir gently until sugar is moistened.
  4. Attach a candy thermometer to the pan and heat the mixture over medium-high heat without stirring until it reaches 300°F.
  5. Once at temperature, remove from heat and stir in food coloring and cinnamon extract. Allow bubbles to subside for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Tilt the saucepan and dip each apple, letting excess drip off. Place on the prepared sheet to cool.
  7. Allow to cool completely at room temperature for at least 20 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the candy reaches 300°F for a hard coating.
  • Wait for bubbles to subside before dipping.
  • Store at room temperature, uncovered, and consume within 1-2 days.
