These classic homemade candy apples are a perfect treat for Memorial Day gatherings. With just a few simple ingredients and a foolproof technique, you’ll have delightful candy apples ready in no time.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 medium firm apples (Granny Smith or Fuji recommended)
- 2 cups granulated white sugar
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon red gel food coloring (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon extract (optional)
- 6 wooden candy apple sticks
- Non-stick cooking spray
- Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
Instructions
- Prepare your workspace: line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly coat with non-stick cooking spray.
- Remove wax from apples by dipping in boiling water for 5 seconds and scrubbing with a towel. Insert sticks into the stem end of each apple.
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir gently until sugar is moistened.
- Attach a candy thermometer to the pan and heat the mixture over medium-high heat without stirring until it reaches 300°F.
- Once at temperature, remove from heat and stir in food coloring and cinnamon extract. Allow bubbles to subside for 1-2 minutes.
- Tilt the saucepan and dip each apple, letting excess drip off. Place on the prepared sheet to cool.
- Allow to cool completely at room temperature for at least 20 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the candy reaches 300°F for a hard coating.
- Wait for bubbles to subside before dipping.
- Store at room temperature, uncovered, and consume within 1-2 days.
