Papal Cream Cake: 5 Layers of Decadent Delight

  • Author: ushinzomr

Description

A delicious and decadent dessert featuring layers of sponge cake filled with creamy custard and topped with a rich chocolate ganache.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar (for custard)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (for custard)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (for ganache)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool completely.
  6. While the cake is baking, prepare the custard. In a saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let cool.
  7. Once the cake has cooled, slice it horizontally into two layers. Spread the custard evenly over the bottom layer, then place the top layer back on.
  8. For the ganache, heat 1/2 cup of heavy cream in a saucepan until just simmering. Pour it over the chopped chocolate and let sit for 5 minutes. Stir until smooth.
  9. Pour the ganache over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides. Refrigerate until set.
  10. Slice and serve the Papal Cream Cake chilled.

Notes

  • You can add fruit between the layers for extra flavor.
  • Make sure to let the ganache cool slightly before pouring it over the cake to avoid melting the custard.
