A classic Latin American dessert made with three types of milk, resulting in a moist, rich, and sweet cake that’s perfect for any occasion.

- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 5 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- for garnish cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the whole milk. Mix until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the tres leches mixture by combining the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk in a bowl.
- Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes. Poke holes all over the top of the cake using a fork.
- Slowly pour the tres leches mixture over the warm cake, allowing it to soak in. Let it cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
- Before serving, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the cake and sprinkle with cinnamon if desired.
Notes
- For added flavor, you can add a splash of rum or vanilla extract to the tres leches mixture.
- This cake can be made a day in advance for a better flavor as it allows the milk to fully soak into the cake.
