Turkish Desserts: 7 Irresistible Baklava Variations

  • Author: ushinzomr

Description

A classic Turkish dessert made of layers of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with honey syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package of filo pastry (about 16 ounces)
  • 2 cups of unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups of walnuts or pistachios, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon and set aside.
  3. Brush a 9×13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Layer 10 sheets of filo pastry in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.
  4. Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture over the filo pastry. Add 5 more layers of filo, brushing each with butter, then another layer of nuts. Repeat layering until all nuts are used, finishing with at least 8 layers of filo on top.
  5. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  6. Bake for about 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. While baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by combining sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  8. Once the baklava is done baking, pour the hot syrup over it immediately. Allow to cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure to keep the filo pastry covered with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
  • Baklava can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
